Californication Season 4
Season 3 of Californication ended with a record breaking 57% jump in viewers, after it seems people just can’t get enough of Hank Moody and his sexually adventurous journeys. It is now official that Californication will be going for a 4th season, after Showtime’s Network president of entertainment, Robert Greenblatt officially annouced that there will be another twelve episodes of Californication premiering in 2010.
Now overtaking Entourage’s Vinny Chase, Hank Moody is the unmatched bachelor of California. We just can’t get over the slyness of Hank, and his out of control desire to fornicate every woman that he sees, mind you it’s usually the women that fall for him, not the other way around. Even though he is the biggest asshole possible, the women just melt over him!
Currently in the middle of filming season 4 of Californication, we are going to have to wait in utter pain for the season to be completed and to be premiered to us all. Until then, it’s back to Entourage for most of us!

Free To Air is About to Change
According to the law, television stations around the country must change their method of sending TV signals known as analog, to digital television (DTV) as of February 17, 2009 (2010 for Australia). Digital Television is a new type of broadcasting technology that transmits movie-quality pictures and sound, a greater number of channels, and even high definition broadcasts (HDTV) to those with HD television sets. The benefits of Digital TV are insane, millions of households who’s TV reception is not great at the moment risk losing television altogether unless they take the easy steps to receive a digital signal, due to the extensive signal strength required to receive a digital frequency.

Antenna on Analog TV
Consumers who receive free broadcast television signals through antennas on television sets that are equipped with analog tuners – and who do not subscribe to cable, satellite or a telephone company service provider – will be affected by the transition.
Antenna on Digital TV
All TVs with a digital tuner are able to receive digital signals broadcast by television stations, so you can continue to receive your free programming with no fees.
Cable or Satellite TV
Any TV set in your home that is connected to a cable, satellite or a telephone company television service should not be affected by the transition. But if you have any TV sets–perhaps in a bedroom or kitchen–that are not connected to a paid TV service, you will need to upgrade those sets to continue receiving a television signal on those sets after the transition to digital television
How do I get Digital TV?
You can prepare for the transition to digital television by purchasing a digital set top box, or getting a converter box, or buying a new digital TV set. To purchase these items click here.

Free-to-air TV Channels holding their own Against Cable TV
SINGAPORE : More than 8 in 10 adults above 15 years old watch television on an average daily basis, according to a Nielsen Media Research survey.
While this is a marginal decline from one year ago, Nielsen said free-to-air channels are holding their own against cable television and the Internet.
If a viewer was watching television yesterday, chances are he would have been watching a local channel.
According to the latest survey by Nielsen Media Research, 83 percent of respondents watch free-to-air programmes on an average day.
In the past week, local programmes were watched by 96 percent of respondents.
That is nearly three times more than the absolute numbers for cable television, even as viewership of free-to-air channels declined slightly from a year ago.
Audiences are now spoilt for choice when it comes to television programmes, with more cable and Internet options than ever.
But according to Nielsen, even as more people are subscribing to cable television, it is the local channels that continue to draw viewers.
Rebecca Tan, Executive Director, Nielsen Media Research, said: “These are local stars that we can identify with, local lifestyle, the local contest, the local politics. So there’s still this draw to watch local programmes.”
Channel NewsAsia continues to draw the most attention from professionals and high income earners.
The Nielsen survey showed that based on viewership on a daily basis, it was the top channel among professionals and managers.
MediaCorp’s new media platforms performed well, according to the survey, as more people went online.
Timothy Goh, VP, Customer Relationship Management, MOCCA, said: “Our websites actually complement our traditional media channels. It brings an element of interactivity, which is a different dimension which you don’t get with the traditional media channels.”
The recent launch of TODAY newspaper’s weekend edition generated much buzz among readers and advertisers.
Nielsen said among English dailies, TODAY newspaper retains its number two position, and is now read in more private homes than in the year before.
TODAY’s readership share held steady at about 17 percent while in terms of absolute numbers, its readership has gained over last year.
The newspaper has some 590,000 readers now, compared with 571,000 in 2006.
PN Balji, Editorial Director, MediaCorp, said, “Despite challenging times for mainstream media, it is heartening that readers have given TODAY this vote of confidence. With the relaunch of Weekend TODAY in July and the buzz that it is creating among readers and advertisers, the TODAY team is looking forward to even better results next year.”
Magazines continue to be popular with survey respondents.
MediaCorp’s i-weekly for instance, is still their favourite weekly, while Elle Magazine has seen its readership jump by over 40 percent.
Among English radio stations, Class 95 emerged tops again, with a 23 percent listenership.
Erina Cook, Senior Programme Director, English Programming (Class 95), said: “It’s actually all about keeping our listeners close to us. It’s all about reinventing ourselves and most importantly, connecting with our listeners on a daily basis.”
The survey was conducted on a sample size of 4,723 adults, aged 15 and above, between July 2006 and June 2007. – CNA/ch
Free To Air Copping a Download
AUSTRALIA’S $3.5 billion free-to-air commercial television industry is being threatened by the internet more quickly than expected, with a new online study showing 53 per cent of respondents regularly download TV shows from the internet, most of them illegally.
The research, conducted by University of Sydney honours student Adam Zuchetti, shows one in four people download TV programs twice a week or more, with downloads now the main form of TV viewing for 21 per cent of respondents.
Almost 800 TV fans responded to the survey, which was conducted on local TV websites earlier this year.
The research shows most people know unauthorised downloading is illegal, but 97per cent of downloaders still use peer-to-peer file-sharing sites, commercial websites such as YouTube, and friends as their main sources of content.
According to Zuchetti, people are tired of watching shows when it’s convenient for the networks, instead of when it suits them.
“People want more ways to access shows,” Zuchetti says. “‘I can now get everything I want from channel BitTorrent, so the commercial networks are going to get what’s coming to them’ — that is typical of what people are saying.”
The research shows 19 per cent of downloaders don’t want to wait for local networks to screen their favourite overseas programs, a further 18 per cent time-shift their viewing to watch programs on demand, and another 17 per cent are accessing programs not screened here.
All of the free-to-air networks are experimenting with making clips from programs available over the internet, with Ten’s podcasts of its comedy Thank God You’re Here just one example.
The network has also screened shows such as The OC and Jericho within 24 hours of their US debut in order to reduce the temptation for fans to go online.
Media buyer Steve Allen from Fusion Strategy says the downloading figures are higher than expected.
According to Free TV Australia, downloading is not affecting viewing levels, which rose 0.7 per cent this year in metropolitan centres.
Allen says while the pressure on the networks is increasing, downloading is unlikely to affect TV viewing by even a single ratings point. “I don’t believe that time-shift viewing is going to … have a major impact on TV,” he says. “We’ve got a couple of examples of shows going to air within 24 hours and it’s made no difference to their viewing levels.
“Desperate Housewives, Lost and Prison Break were all available illegally over the internet last year,” Allen says. “The minute we get the next stage of true broadband, this will become far more a case not of how many people download content, but how often they do it.”
Zuchetti says people who regularly download programs still watch free-to-air TV in order to discuss the shows. “There’s a real cultural divide between downloaders and non-downloaders. The downloaders had to come back and see where Australian viewing was up to, so they could contribute to discussions here.”
Lost was the most downloaded show, the study revealed, followed by Veronica Mars, House, Prison Break and Dr Who.
Paid downloads are among the options local TV operators are exploring to make more shows available on demand: Yahoo7 has flagged its intention to make fresh episodes of TV shows available over the internet for a price. Ten has meanwhile made clips from Australian Idol available to watch with pre and post-roll video ads.
According to Zuchetti’s study, a slight majority (53 per cent) of respondents say they are prepared to pay for content, but one in three will not.
“The most popular option would be to offer the choice of the two: paid, or free downloads with advertising,” he says.
Advertisers are Losing Interest in Free To Air TV
Television advertising revenue fell by $3 million for the six months to June, signaling that the free-to-air broadcasting industry was suffering a distinct cooling from advertisers.
Sales were $287.6 million, compared to $290.6 million for the same period in 2006.
Justine Wilkinson of the TV Broadcasters’ Council (NZTBC) tried to throw a positive spin on the dip in revenue, blaming difficult current market conditions. She said “the trend for television advertising was improving” and that television companies were “quietly optimistic” for the remaining six months of 2007.
The reported figures are sourced from returns prepared by Television New Zealand (TV ONE and TV2), TV Works (TV3 and C4), and Sky Network’s free to air Prime channel.
The NZTBC releases television advertising revenue information to the market every six months.
Free To Air Continues To Crumble
THE longstanding walls protecting free-to-air TV continue to crumble, with the announcement that the commercial networks will make their jealously guarded electronic program guides available to all manufacturers.
The decision, announced by the peak networks body FreeTV, dilutes an agreement reached in May between the Seven Network and TiVo, an American personal video recorder company.
The recorders are digital set-top boxes that enable viewers to record shows using information from electronic program guides.
The widespread availability of electronic program guides is likely to drive digital TV in Australia, which, seven years after it was introduced, has spread to fewer than one in three households with access to free-to-air TV only.
Nigel Trinca, a pioneer of personal video recorders in Australia and managing director of Future Tense Solutions, said: “The free-to-air TV networks’ resistance to electronic program guides is what has been holding back digital television in this country.”
Last year the Nine Network took action in the Federal Court after local company Ice TV began providing an independent electronic program guide. Nine alleged the company used Nine’s TV listings without permission.
Final submissions were made late last year and a judgement is expected this year.
Electronic program guides are not simply an electronic version of a TV guide. Coupled with a personal video recorder, they allow viewers to choose what they watch and when.
The advance means less couch potato sprouting and more “appointment viewing”. Critically, it also means viewers can fast forward through advertisements.
Free-to-air networks and many advertisers have been fearful that video recorders could undermine the annual $3.4 billion TV advertising market.
The overseas experience has not been definitive so far, but it appears that viewers with personal video recorders watch more TV.
After Seven announced its agreement with TiVo, the Australian Media and Communications Authority said it might use the new powers granted under the Federal Government’s media laws package to force free-to-air networks to create an industry-wide electronic guide.
FreeTV spokeswoman Julie Flynn trumpeted the arrival of electronic program guides for free-to-air TV, but would not specify when it would happen.
She said commercial broadcasters would make the electronic program guides available to manufacturers of personal video recorders and set-top boxes, providing manufacturers encrypted them to protect program makers’ copyright.
Seven Network spokesman Simon Francis said: “Today’s agreement underlines the importance of Seven’s partnership with bringing to Australia the world’s best technology in personal video recorders.
“Our plans are to work with other partners to bring some much-needed competition and leading technology to consumers.”
Foxtel spokeswoman Rebecca Melkman said: “If all consumers are able to access free-to-air electronic program information, we look forward to the networks supplying the information to the one-in-four households in Australia that have Foxtel.
“We have had an integrated electronic program guide for 3½ years, which now also operates on the internet and soon on mobile phones,” she said.
Social Networking Sites
Social networking sites make it possible to get in touch with people through an online system. There are different ways that this can be used and there are different kinds of social networking sites out there. If you want to start using them, it is important to find out which ones interest you and to use the ones that offer the most potential for your goals. With that said, social networking sites are a fun way to find friends, family, people who you want to get back in touch with, and business contacts. There are so many different uses for them, you don’t even need to pick only one. The first thing you should do if you want to start using social networking sites is to know which ones are out there. This is important because some of them might be geared towards specific purposes. For example, some of them are only for developing business contacts. Others serve multiple purposes and can adapt to whatever you want to do with them. Once you know what is out there, you can begin to sign up for the ones that seem to interest you the most. Even though there may be some social networking sites out there that charge you a fee, most of them are free to sign up for.
After you sign up for the social networking sites that you want to sign up for, your next step is to set up your profile. Your profile is where you can post a picture, list your interests and other information about yourself, and tell people what you hope to get out of the site. This is where people will get to know more about you and you will get a chance to see what kind of things you can do. If you take the time to set up a good profile, you will likely meet more people.
Another thing that is important about social networking sites is that you really do need to participate. If you don’t, you will not get a lot out of it. People will accept you as a friend if you show a genuine interest in them. Make a comment on their profile. Email them and participate in any discussions if you are on a site that does stuff like that. That is how to find success with social networking.
